Milan and Lombardy

Gian Galeazzo Visconti (1351-1402), the first Duke of Milan, invested enormous amounts to embellish the city: it was he who initiated the construction of the Duomo which remains one of the world's largest cathedrals.

This edifice is 157 metres long, 92 large and has a surface area of 11 700m². Within stands a collection of no less than 3 400 sculptures...

The Scala was founded as per request of the Empress Maria-Theresa of Austria - it was built to replace the royal theatre which burnt to the ground in 1776. Some of the world's greatest opera successes have been staged in this very place... It is a household name for anyone with even the slightest interest in classical music.

Enjoy a Milanese aperitif...
On Sundays around 6PM, the bars and cafés of Milan get ready for the "aperitif" rush.

This tour will be dedicated to the finer things in life; you will be able to enjoy delicious spumante or some prosecco, or if you're serious about it try a rather stronger mojito or caïpirinha. A bite to eat with all these drinks: bruschetta, frittata, pasta and various vegetable dishes.

The city of Milan is simply packed with bars, cafés and nightclubs, in particular between the via Tocqueville and the castello Sforzesco. The Executive Lounge Garden, at 3 via de Tocqueville, offers a variety of cocktails in a relaxing lounge atmosphere. At number 13 on the same road you'll find the originally-named Tocqueville 13, a great place for serious partying.

On Sundays the Supersunday Club boasts excellent resident DJs; but you can also see some of the best-known Milanese Djs such as Walter Fargi or Stefano Pain.

If you're still in a party mood, walk down corso Como towards the château. The avenue is brimming with nightclubs such as the Hollywood, oldest club in town, where you can rub shoulders with various celebrities...

Strolling along Milan's riverbanks
Milan is itself a network of canals: the Naviglio Grande, Pavese and Martesana. These canals and their banks are favoured areas for locals and tourists to spend time during the sunny months.

Begin your stroll on the banks of the Naviglio Grande, a canal built in the 13th century which was primarily used for transporting various goods. Today, the banks are full of life. Relax at a café terrace and order an aperitivo if you get there after 6PM.

Keep following the banks until you reach the end of the canal and the piazza XXIV Maggio. This expansive square was a connecting point between the canal and the city centre in the Middle-Ages - at the time it was a network of internal canals. Stay on course and walk along the Naviglio Pavese, where you can enjoy some traditional cuisine from one of the Trattorie (restaurants).

End the day around a nice drink in a bar on Ascanio Sforza, the road parallel to the Pavese canal.

Discover the Milanese A to Z
Milan's old town is easily accessible on foot, so take to the streets to experience Milanese history.

Starting from the piazza del Duomo in the city centre, take the time to admire the imposing cathedral. This masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture is one of the largest cathedrals in the world. It would take a lifetime to see every notable aspect, so the best solution is to visit the cathedral's museum and, before moving on, make your way to the roof to enjoy the view.

Follow via Orefici till you find piazza Cordusio from which you can see both the castle and the cathedral. Continue on via Dante and you'll soon see the castello Sforzesco looming above you, a magnificent red brick castle which was once the residence of local dukes. Rebuilt in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, the castle grounds feature a 47-hectare park, and the building itself is home to a number of museums: the Egizio museum, the museums of Prehistory, Ancient Art, and of Musical Instruments, and the Pinacothèque (art gallery).

End your tour of Milan by relaxing in the Sempione park on the other side of the castle grounds. The park was landscaped in 1894, within you will find a magnificent Neo-Classical arena inaugurated by Napoleon himself a century earlier in 1806.

Word of advice: be sure to visit the top of the park tower to watch the sunset around a drink, surveying the landscape for miles...
